Insomnia Management Therapy aftercare: First 7 Days Aftercare Checklist
By Santhigram Kerala Ayurveda Health & Wellness Centre CA | October 19, 2026
If you do one thing in the first 24 to 48 hours after our 45-minute Insomnia Management Therapy session, make it this: keep your evening calm and predictable. Skip alcohol and extra caffeine, limit screens at night, and don’t push through if you feel drowsy. If you’re unusually sleepy, dizzy, or your symptoms feel worse, call us right away and don’t drive until you feel fully alert.
Our Insomnia Management Therapy is a deeply restorative Nidranaasa Chikitsa treatment designed to calm the mind and soothe the nervous system, so you can step out of that wired-tired cycle. This checklist is written for real life in Mississauga, especially if you’re commuting near Highway 401 or 407 and need clear rules you can follow without overthinking.
First 24 to 48 hours: the “don’t override your body” rules
Most of the first-day wins come from protecting the calm we built in-session. In our Meadowvale area clinic, we see a lot of busy schedules, long drives, and late dinners. For the first 24 to 48 hours, we generally recommend you treat your evening like a reset, not a productivity contest.
Quick checklist (same day + next day):
- If you feel drowsy or “floaty, ” don’t drive. Arrange a ride or wait until you’re fully alert.
- Skip heavy exercise the same day. A gentle walk is fine if it feels good.
- Avoid alcohol and don’t add extra caffeine “to power through.” Both can disrupt sleep and make your night choppy.
- Keep your evening meal lighter than usual and finish earlier if you can.
- Plan a wind-down: dim lights, warm shower, quiet music, paper book, or breathing practice.
A note on stimulants, sedatives, and “sleep aids”
Keep taking any prescribed medication exactly as directed. Don’t start, stop, or double up on sleep medication because you had a great night or a rough night. And please don’t mix in new sedatives, stimulants, or supplements without checking first. If you’re unsure about something you’re taking, let us know what it is and how often you use it, and we’ll talk you through safer next steps.
If we gave you specific instructions related to light exposure or timing, follow those closely in this window. Timing matters more than intensity in the first couple of days.
Days 3 to 7: the habits that stop insomnia from creeping back
This is where people usually slip. You feel a little better, work gets loud again, and bedtime drifts later. Keep it boring this week. A steady rhythm helps your nervous system settle, and it gives us clean feedback on what’s improving and what’s still getting in the way.
Your sleep schedule matters more than your perfect routine
- Keep one wake time as consistently as you can, even after a bad night.
- Aim for a steady bedtime window. If you’re not sleepy, do something quiet and low light until you are.
- Protect the last hour before bed. Lower lights. Lower volume. Lower urgency.
- If you nap, keep it short and earlier so it doesn’t steal your sleep drive at night.
What to avoid this week
Try not to do “revenge bedtime” scrolling. Avoid late caffeine, even if you feel like you can handle it. And don’t test your limits with alcohol. A lot of people fall asleep faster after a drink and then wake up at 2 or 3 a.m. and can’t get back down.
Sleep diary + screen rules: the two simplest tools we lean on
We’re big on practical tracking, not obsessing. A simple sleep diary helps us see patterns fast, especially when you’re trying a therapy plan and making lifestyle changes at the same time.
A 60-second sleep diary (write it in the morning)
- Bedtime and wake time
- How long it felt like it took to fall asleep
- Any night waking (rough times are fine)
- Caffeine and alcohol timing
- Daytime energy and sleepiness
Screen time after therapy: keep it simple
If you need your phone at night, keep it dim, keep it warm-toned, and keep it boring. Put scrolling apps away in the last 45 to 60 minutes. The goal is less stimulation, not perfection.
If you’re new to the session itself, our guide to your first Insomnia Management Therapy visit lays out how we approach the intake, the session flow, and common questions.
Night-shift aftercare tips we use a lot in Meadowvale Business Park
Shift work changes the rules, but you can still support your results. If you’re rotating or working nights around Meadowvale Business Park, our goal is to create a repeatable routine that fits the shift you’re actually living this week.
Light exposure: use it like a switch
- When you need to be awake, get bright light early in your “day” (even if that’s late afternoon).
- When you need to sleep, block light. Dark room, eye mask, and limit sunlight on the way home if possible.
- If your schedule is shifting, adjust in small steps. A 30 to 60 minute move is often easier than a full flip overnight.
Caffeine and naps: be strategic
Caffeine tends to hang around longer than people think. Keep it earlier in your shift and avoid it close to your planned sleep. If you nap, go short. A long nap can leave you groggy and make it harder to sleep when you actually have the window.
If this is your main concern, read our Insomnia Management Therapy for shift workers post. It’s built for real schedules and real fatigue.
When to reach out to our Mississauga clinic (and how we support follow-ups)
Some ups and downs in the first week are normal. What we don’t want is you pushing through something that needs a quick check-in. We keep aftercare support practical, especially for commuters coming off Highway 401 or 407. And yes, we offer flexible evening and weekend follow-ups when schedules are tight.
Reach out right away if you notice:
- New or severe daytime sleepiness that makes work or driving unsafe
- Dizziness, confusion, or feeling “off” in a way that worries you
- Worsening symptoms instead of gradual settling
- No improvement after the follow-up window we discussed, or you’re not sure what to do next

Quick FAQs for Insomnia Management Therapy aftercare
How soon will I feel better after Insomnia Management Therapy?
Some people notice they feel calmer the same day. For others, sleep improves in steps over the first week. Track your bedtime, wake time, and how you feel during the day so we can see what’s shifting and guide your follow-up care.
Can I drive home after Insomnia Management Therapy?
If you feel fully alert, you can usually drive. If you’re unusually drowsy, dizzy, or feel unsafe to drive, don’t. Arrange a ride or wait until you’re clear-headed. If you’re unsure, call us and we’ll help you make the call.
Can I drink coffee or alcohol the same day after treatment?
We recommend skipping alcohol and avoiding extra caffeine in the first 24 to 48 hours. Both can interfere with sleep quality and make it harder to read how your system is responding.
Will Insomnia Management Therapy affect my current sleep medication?
Keep taking your medication exactly as prescribed unless the prescribing clinician tells you to change it. Don’t add new sedatives, stimulants, or supplements without checking first. Let us know what you take and when, and we’ll guide your aftercare plan around it.
How should night-shift workers modify aftercare following Insomnia Management Therapy?
Anchor your routine to one consistent sleep block, protect it with darkness, and use bright light early in your “day” to help your body clock. Keep caffeine earlier in your shift and avoid it close to your planned sleep. Short naps tend to work better than long ones for most shift workers.
